Everyone at the moment is thinking these are good things (the ability to make music so easily with a lot of virtual sources). Especially at the moment with labels disappearing and all of the people that once helped decide whether a record is coming out or not not—the label manager, the friend of the label, the designer—are going away. People are finding it easy to publish something without any controls. And this is the problem with the internet in general. There is so much information, and no one knows if it’s true or not. It’s just there. It’s an information monster.

Après un an d’absence discographique, le mancunien Claro Intelecto revient en famille pour signer la cinquante-septième référence du label Modern Love. Composé de deux titres + une outro ambiant, j’ai choisi de vous parler non pas du track éponyme en face a (Chadderton), mais de celui de la b-side intitulé Above, immersion caractéristique de la dernière mutation du son de Mark Stewart (les premières heures étaient electro sur AI, puis techno stripped et atmosphérique sur Modern Love, avant de verser plus explicitement dans le dub-techno, à l’image de son – influent – ami Andy Stott). Bonne pioche pour Lerosa, producteur multicarte orienté rétro-moderne (house & techno), puisqu’après avoir signé sur une nouvelle génération de labels rafraichissants et de qualité (Quintessentials, Uzuri, Millions of Moments – entre autre), c’est avec un enthousiasme grandissant que l’on observe ce jeune irlandais s’étoffer encore un peu plus en plaçant un titre sur le sérieux label Ostgut Ton de Berlin. Plesso (également playlisté sur la nouvelle compilation Panorama Bar mixée par Tama Sumo) est caractéristique des tracks de la maison Berghain : lourd-posé, percutant et mental, dark, voir (restons dans le contexte) totalement “backroomesque”, et bien dosé. There is a division between the rich and the poor. And these technologies are usually controlled by the people that have the ressources to fund them. The technologies which become obsolete are no longer useful for this powerful group, and eventually trickle down to what we see today. A lot of outdated military technology is now in use with the common people, the general public. Take a radar, for example, which was invented in the Second World War. Now you can use the same technology in your vehicule to ward off police.

You can find new uses for any kind of technology.

People are still using nets to catch fish, people are still using knives in the kitchen. And those technologies have been around for thousands of years. They don’t become obsolete, they become refined over time.

On commence à parler de plus en plus du belge Peter Van Hoesen (à juste titre d’ailleurs), et si il y a un artiste qui le talonne de près dans la sphère berghain-techno, c’est bien du côté du berlinois Mike Dehnert, responsable du label Fachwerk, que l’on peut se tourner. God is a Dj est le quatrième épisode de PopObsession (proposé par Arte) et diffusé le 18 Août 2005. Cette série en cinq parties questionnait des artistes, musiciens contemporains issus de styles différents (rock, pop, techno, funk…) sur leur relation passionnée à leur musique, à leurs instruments, machines, ou disques (pour les Dj’s).

J’ai choisi d’éditer cet épisode, en ne conservant que les interventions de notre tonton Laurent Garnier, ainsi que celle de la compatriote Miss Kittin qui lui rend un bel hommage. Le reste du reportage n’est pas extrêmement pertinent et se perd parfois en longueur, malgré quelques interviews intéressantes comme celle entre le plus vieux Dj allemand Günter Discher et Sven Väth.

Computer games don’t affect kids. I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.
